Mena Suvari Recalls a 'Weird and Unusual' Encounter with Kevin Spacey on American Beauty Set

While making American Beauty in 1999, Mena Suvari remembers an "unusual experience" she had with Kevin Spacey every bit they prepared to film an intimate scene. She thought of it once again years after after the corruption allegations against the actor made headlines.
The actress, 42, tells PEOPLE she "trusted him" throughout the filming of the Oscar-winning film. Even so, she said i particular moment on set up left her feeling foreign.

To prepare for a scene ane day, he brought her into a side room where they "lay on the bed very close to one some other," she describes to PEOPLE in this week's consequence. "He was sort of gently holding me. It was very peaceful simply weird and unusual."
"My eye goes out to anyone who suffers abuse," she says.
In her new memoirThe Great Peace: A Memoir, excerpted in this week'south PEOPLE, Suvari talks near her own experiences of sexual abuse while growing up.
Suvari says she was "living a double life" when American Beauty made her a star.
"Every time I would get on a set. Every time I was interviewed, I was acting the whole time. Information technology was another role for me to play. That I was okay," she tells PEOPLE.

In her almost challenging times, Suvari found solace in her acting piece of work. Later her role inAmerican Pie (1999), she got the part of Angela, the teenage cheerleader inAmerican Beauty who is the object of a center aged man's obsession, played by Spacey. The office brought her much acclaim and a BAFTA nomination for All-time Supporting Actress. Looking back, she says of American Dazzler: "It was a beautiful experience, being given the opportunity to work and limited myself right when I needed I to save me."
By sharing her trauma and how she constitute her mode out, Suvari also hopes to help others who have suffered. "This is my truth. This is my vocalism," she says. "I was so tired of fighting and hiding my whole life. I hope I tin help someone else see their value. If I can lessen the pain for someone else, and so I want to practise it, considering I didn't have that person."
Allegations against Spacey were starting time brought forward in Oct 2018 by actor Anthony Rapp, who alleged the player had previously fabricated inappropriate sexual advances toward him when he was merely 14-years-sometime.
In response, Spacey issued a statement on Twitter addressing the allegations — and came out as gay.
"I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp every bit an player. I'm across horrified to hear his story," he said. "I honestly do not remember the encounter, information technology would have been over 30 years agone. But if I did behave every bit he describes, I owe him the sincerest amends for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken beliefs, and I am lamentable for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years."
